Insider Tip on Gran Canaria: Barranco de los Cernícalos

When you first landed on Gran Canaria, did you also have the feeling that you had arrived on the moon? At least that's how I felt at first, but this impression was very deceptive, as this blog entry will show.

Yesterday we did a fantastic hike with our 1-year-old Labrador in the "Barranco de los Cernícalos", for many but not for all a true insider tip, on weekends some hikers enjoy the approx. 7 km long route, remember, you also have to go back... so it's 14 km in total. Beginners can walk the first 3 km or so quite well, after that it becomes a bit more challenging. You walk along a beautiful water channel with various waterfalls. It is often shady under the trees and bushes, so you will not be permanently exposed to the sun. If you want to enjoy the peace and quiet, I recommend walking through the barranco in the morning between Monday and Thursday. From Maspalomas you drive the approx. 45 km in about 50 minutes by car, from Las Palmas it is about 35 minutes, it is worth it in any case.

You have to be a bit careful when approaching, on the GC 1 you first drive in the direction of Telde, which is incidentally the second largest town on Gran Canaria with around 103,000 inhabitants. From there you drive through the villages "Valle de los Nuevo", "Lomo de Magullo" and "Los Arenales" until you reach the car park. Please remember to wear sturdy shoes and a jacket. Depending on the season and weather conditions, it can be quite chilly at times. I wish you lots of fun, also on the many other hiking routes on our beautiful Canary Island.
